Here is a full blown update about the activities held during Healthfest. Healthfest celebrated a health lifestyle and it turned out to be a tremendous success. It was held throughout the first week of May. The PSD, PE and Art teachers’ joined forces to create healthy activities for every year group. The main objectives behind this project were:
- to understand the importance of choosing healthy food;
- to create art food and thus present snacks which are appealing to children and
- to exercise physically on a daily basis.
Here is a daily record of what went on!
Monday 5 May 2014
Year 6 classes were engaged in a cooking session. Three classes worked on an Angry Bird Pitta while the other three created a Pirate Pitta. The children brought all the necessary ingredients from home but prepared the pitta here at school, cooking it in an oven and then eating it.
The activity ended with a one hour session at the pool as part of their physical exercise. They went to the Pixxina at Tal-Qroqq for swimming activities.
Tuesday 6 May 2014
Fruit was on the Year 5’s menu today. Three classes were asked to bring various fruit and create palm trees with bananas and kiwi while the other three classes made a clown’s face, always using fruit. The children enjoyed decorating their fruit salad but most of all enjoyed eating it.
Eventually, they were then asked to do some physical activities in the school yard. They had 6 different games which they played over the span of an hour.
Wednesday 7 May 2014
Year 3 children were asked to bring brown bread slices to prepare some healthy “owly” and “fishy” sandwiches. The classes were divided into two groups. The first group worked on the owl sandwich; the main ingredients being cheese and vegetables. Similarly, the second group prepared their fish sandwich and during break ate it as their lunch.
The children also played different games where they were on the move, exercising their body in activities which were familiar to them and are usually done during the physical education lesson.
Thursday 8 May 2014
Year 4 classes were the last group which took part in the Healthfest. Children were asked to get their favourite cereal and fruit. Together with the first group, we created a butterfly with fruit on a base of cereal in a cup cake container. The second three classes were asked to create a ladybird. The children were very enthusiastic during the activities. One of the activities consisted in squeezing and drinking orange juice.
A sports’ day followed and students had the opportunity to exercise. They enjoyed different fun games ranging from water games to races and ball games.
Friday 9 May 2014
On the last day of the Healthfest all the school went out on a Fun Walk. Year 3 and Year 4 classes walked from Zabbar to Xghajra enjoying a lunch break by the sea and then proceeded to Smart City. The older students walked from Zabbar to Birgu and Kalkara. Finally, we all gathered back to school tired but happy that we all finished the Fun Walk.
Well done to all!
