27 January is the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On this day we remember the millions of victims who were murdered the Second World War. On 27 January 1945, Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration and death camp, was liberated by the Red Army. On this day we remember these atrocities to ensure that they do not happen again.
However, remembering is not enough. Even today, we witness acts of hatred, discrimination, oppression and murder. It is easy to point fingers and argue that this has nothing to do with “me”. It is easy to blame “others”. We need to realise that we all need to act when we witness acts of discrimination and violence. Doing nothing is not an option.
Yesterday we welcomed Mr Patrick Siegele, from the Anne Frank Centre in Berlin. He delivered a workshop to a delegation of Year 5 and Year 6 students who then had the responsibility of sharing the experience with their classmates.
Here are a few photos from the event.
