Pupils in Year 4 have been following Our Community – a programme by Junior Achievement – Young Enterprise Malta.
Junior Achievement Young Enterprise is a non-government not-for-profit organisation which focuses on delivering entrepreneurship programmes at different levels in schools. Designed specifically for pupils aged 7 to 8, Our Community provides a foundation for Enterprise and are delivered in schools by professional persons who have been trained specifically by the organisation to deliver practical and fun activities that children understand and can relate to.
Through these sessions children
1. learn what a community is
2. understand what makes up a community
3. look at the different aspects of communities and understand enterprise within a community
4. compare and appreciate what is within their own community and what can be added
5. discuss and communicate what to do with an empty shop
6. understand the role of money
7. understand why taxes are necessary
8. walk through the motions of money around a community.
The sessions are held once weekly.
At the end of Our Community the pupils would have learnt how to work in a group , discuss and argue their decisions, vote and build their own community expressing their ideas . This knowledge, together with the activities and experiences shared should give pupils an informed view of the attitudes and skills that are necessary to succeed in the world beyond the classroom.
Here are a few photos from one of the sessions:
