An essay writing competition in collaboration with Palazzo Falson
Year 5 and Year 6 students at Żabbar B are invited to participate in an essay writing competition in collaboration with Palazzo Falson in Mdina.
Palazzo Falson is a medieval palace built by the local nobility in Mdina. The Palazzo consists of a series of rooms wrapped around an internal courtyard. The oldest part of the building dates back to the 13th century. Palazzo Falson also contains a number of features from different subsequent historical periods and styles.
The Palazzo is also the former home of Capt Olof Frederick Gollcher OBE (1889-1962), an artist, scholar, and philanthropist, but also a discerning collector of objets d’art and historical objects. Palazzo Falson was not only his home, but also a setting for his works of art and antiques. He spent many happy years constantly adding to and rearranging his collections.
In 2001 Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti restored the palazzo and all its contents so that the general public can now appreciate this unique and extraordinary treasure-trove.
The Competition
Are you brave enough to spend a night at Palazzo Falson, alone, with no mobile phone and no way to leave?
The curator turns off the light, bids you farewell and then locks the door! You are all alone, until the morning…
Write a story of not less than 250 words to tell us what happened during your night at the Palazzo from evening till dawn. Your story must include at least one artefact that can be found in the museum from the list below.
- The Nef
- Fob watches
- Fans
- Perfume bottles
- Oriental rugs
- Whistles

It is important that whoever reads your story:
- Clearly understands that the story happened in Palazzo Falson. You could say it out loud by stating that you are spending the night at the Palazzo or you could be more subtle, giving away hints…
- Is able to identify the artefact/s that is part of your story. Again, you could just say which artefact this is, or you could use your imagination to let the reader find out by providing a detailed description of the object…
To help you write your story, you are invited to send an email to Palazzo Falson on administration@palazzofalson.com, asking for more information about the artefact/s you will write about in your story.
Use your ilearn address.
Teachers will shortlist the best stories which will be sent to the curator who, together with a panel, will select a winner. The winner will be invited to visit Palazzo Falson with his or her family from a private tour (against a token donation). Decisions are final and not open to discussion.
You have till 25 June 2020 to submit your story using this link.
Have fun!
